Overview

This course consists of guided meditations drawing on Bruce Ecker’s Coherence Therapy.

The goal of these meditations is to:

  1. Discover the symptom and the underlying belief structures that hold it in place or make it ‘necessary’.
  2. Integrate these insights: See how these beliefs (schemas, memories, expectations) play out in our lives. This is done with understanding and compassion.
  3. Transform the underlying belief: After the underlying structures have been discovered and integrated, have lived, emotionally corrective experiences in the meditation that will help bring about emotional memory reconsolidation: what Bruce Ecker calls “transformational change.” This memory reconsolidation makes the symptom (coping mode) no longer necessary as the underlying belief (schemas, memories, expectations) has been transformed.

In these meditations we take the prosymptom position.  This is a posture which seeks to see the coherent emotional logic that underlies the target psychological symptoms. It also views these symptoms as necessary and adaptive, given the underlying belief structure. The underlying beliefs are seen as necessary responses to an earlier environment (usually an unsupportive early childhood environment). This helps us de-pathologize beliefs or parts of self, facilitating greater self-acceptance, wisdom, and compassion towards self.

The course also draws from Buddhist visualization meditation, Buddhist compassion practices, Attachment Theory (Bowlby, Ainsworth), Metacognitive Psychotherapy (Rome Group: Liotti, DiMaggio, Semarari), Schema Therapy (Young), and Ideal Parent Figure Protocol (Brown & Elliott).
